September Breezes and No Crowds

September 3rd, 2014

As soon as the kids went back to school, things got really quiet down here.  The weeks of flat calm weather have ended right about at the same time.  This is a good thing, as we were finding water surface temps in the low 90’s and rare reverse thermoclines of hot more dense water on the sea floor.  This pushes fish deeper, shuts fish down in the shallows and is extremely harmful for our local reefs.  Just before Labor Day the wind kicked up a bit and has been with us for over a week.  The water has had a good chance to turn over and mix and I suspect things should be more in balance now.  This time of year we commonly see a few minor tropical systems that cool our waters down with rain and wave action, but not the case this year.

I have been recovering and resting from the busiest season I have seen in the Keys in quite some time.  Now is my time to explore some new fishing opportunities, learn some tricks and test out new areas to bring my customers.  I’m still open for business and there is plenty of good fishing to be found.  I’ve been keeping a close on eye on all of the fishing and diving reports and it looks like the usual patterns are there.  Snapper on the reef edge have been good early and late, but better at night.  Offshore dolphin are thinning out, but the tuna are still biting good most days out on the humps.  Our water clarity has been good and bad depending on where you are, but the moon jellyfish are here on the reef most of the time now.  I highly recommend long sleeve rash guards for all of my customers entering the water for the next few months until the water cools down quite a bit.  Lobstering should be pretty good again in the bay and ocean coral heads as the pressure is off and they should have filled in again by now.  Since the conditions have been on the windy side with some rainy days, I have had to cancel my last 3 trips and I am lacking reports.

In summary, now is a great time to get in on most everything you are interested in.  I will be rested, the boat will be shined up and the crowds are long gone.  Maybe a little hot, some days breezy or rainy, but nothing beats a great day on the water in the Florida Keys!  Thanks to all of my customers that have supported and recommended my business to others.  I work my butt off to give you the best day I can provide, in hopes of earning your business back next year.  I am beyond grateful to be me doing what I do.  This is my passion and I enjoy bringing my local knowledge and a diversity of activities for you and your family to enjoy.  Thank you all, let’s do it again soon!!
