Late February Report, Closer To Epic

February 27th, 2016

I’ll keep this short and on topic because we all have something to do.  It’s 8:30pm and the boat and I need washing!!  I was reading back through my last report to see what has changed and it is more than less.  We are closer to calendar Spring, so it is just a matter to how much longer is our weather roller coaster going to last.  The good is that the water is on a warming trend and we are seeing more appropriate temps to support good fishing.  The bad is the water is still very dirty and our bi-weekly cold fronts keep the wind here more than not.    I have had to replace all of my spearing trips with rod and reel trips because of the dirty water.  Since the beginning of the year there has been really no stability where the ocean has had a chance to be still and let the dust settle.  That has to change in the next few weeks.  I’m happy to book in the water trips with the understanding that all trips in the water trips will be substituted with rod and reel trips to keep me in business.

No offshore trips either, but the reef and bay side fishing has been great.  We have been playing the wind to keep in the comfortable where and when appropriate.  On the bay there has been an epic Spanish Mackerel bite and some fair mangrove snapper fishing when the current and wind are in the same direction.

The ocean has been an ever changing animal with a different degree of my last report.  I have had many great customers that have been open in putting me in charge of the direction of our day.  This is where I match you or your group to what we have to work with each day.  I mean this in a good way as I make the plan as I drive the boat out and have the chance to “read” the water and focus on what I see.  I plan the night before for this and that, but the water tells me what is going to work.  There is more elements in play than what you want to understand right now, so this is the best way to go.  Typically we talk after you arrive and I get a sense of what you want for your day.  I am great in communicating, so I narrate what I see and pitch your choices as the picture develops.  I find this is the best way to cater to your wants with consideration to what is happening in real time.  We have had all of the good things with the diversity of customers I charter day to day.  Big trophy fish trips , fast action, good eating, mulit species trips, kids trips, wives, guys trips and all mixes of people have been aboard the past few weeks.  Granted we have had to ride through less than great conditions, but the fishing has been good to great.

The ocean has been producing from shallow to deep, but it is all about conditions to the degree, water color, tide and wind direction.  It is almost like reading a mood ring times 10.  Sounds complicated, but I got this!  It’s all about rolling with the changes.  Today we had another cold front and I was pleasantly surprised that the fish just didn’t care like they should and have.  We caught them like in a fantasy because we finally reached the breaking point of the fish.  The rules shifted, standards have changed and fish are eating because they waited and waited, but the better water never came and now they are starving!

Now that you have the gist of the situation, fishing is still the best way to go now.  Just let me make it happen and I will tell you how it is. The pattern is it has  been improving and every trip has ended better than expected.

My in the water trips are still very prone to the bad visibility, but I look for this to improve in a week or two.  Fishing is on the upswing and I see this gaining momentum too. I hope to get some trips offshore for tuna and drop some divers into the clear water to spear some fish.  Lobstering is done for the year unless you are completely desperate.  Thanks to all of my customers and followers!!  I’m closing in on 28 million views on YouTube and passed a thousand likes on my Facebook page.  A humble thank you to all!!  I’m happy to be me and look forward to many great adventures in 2016! Please help me grow my business and my footprint on social media.  Check out some fun videos on my YouTube page, search kjgophish and subscribe.  “Like” my business Facebook page under Florida Keys Reel Adventures and follow what is happening day to day with my customers and on the water adventures.  Above all, please write a review of your experience on TripAdvisor, Google, or whatever to let others know of your experience.  I try with every ounce of my ability to bring you the best of what I can offer for the best price with what I have to work with to make your trip a “reel adventure.”  Let your hotel know, spread the word and I maybe I can grow into a little bigger boat to offer more to your family and friends.  All good going through 2016 and you are the reason.  Thank you all!!

Kevin
