Frequently Asked Questions
Arrival & Logistics
Where do we meet for the trip?
We meet at Captain Hooks Marina, 11833 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL 33050. I am located at the fuel dock behind the main building.
What time should we arrive?
Please arrive early. This allows time for parking, moving bags to the boat, applying sunscreen, and last-minute bathroom breaks. It is a very busy public dock with limited space; we need to minimize our time at the dock to get the trip started on time.
What happens if I am late?
Being late starts the trip on a bad note and inconveniences other boaters waiting for dock space. Early is on time, and on time is on time. Please respect the schedule so we can maximize your time on the water.
Clothing & Sun Protection
What should I wear?
To stay comfortable in the subtropical sun, I highly recommend:
A long-sleeve SPF quick-drying shirt.
A “Buff” to cover your neck and ears.
A hat and polarized sunglasses.
Avoid brand-new, unwashed red or navy blue clothing (the dye stains the boat).
Note: We catch fish and get dirty—expect that some blood or slime may get on your clothes.
When should I apply sunscreen?
Apply all sunscreen BEFORE you get on the boat. Spray and lotion sunscreens are greasy and create slippery, messy surfaces if applied on board.
Onboard Rules & Amenities
Are food and drinks provided?
I provide an iced cooler with complimentary water and drinks. There is plenty of room in the cooler for your own snacks and additional beverages.
What should I NOT bring?
To keep the boat clean and safe, please do not bring:
Glass containers of any kind.
Personal GPS devices.
Staining foods/items: Blueberries, concentrated drink mixes, chewing tobacco/dip, sunflower seeds, or nuts.
Large coffees: Large cups are prone to spilling in a moving boat. Treat the trip like a 4-hour flight—limit your “excess” liquids.
Is there a bathroom on board?
There is a freshwater marine head (bathroom) available for ladies only. Gentlemen are asked to utilize the back of the boat/open water.
How should I pack my belongings?
Bring the minimum needed. There is dry storage for cell phones and cameras on the dashboard. A gallon-sized Zip-Lock bag is the best way to protect any electronics or items that must stay dry.
Health & Safety
What if I am prone to motion sickness?
If you have no ocean boating experience or are prone to sea sickness, you should take motion sickness medication in two cycles before the trip (follow the package instructions for dosing). Many find taking it the night before and the morning of ensures they aren’t groggy during the trip. Always check with your doctor for medical advice in regard to medications.
What if I am feeling sick?
If you have a cold, flu, or virus, please do not come on the trip. We share many surfaces in a small area, and I cannot afford to get sick and cancel trips for other families.
Activity-Specific Preparation
Fishing Trips:
Know your limits. If your group is inexperienced, book a Reef/Bayside or Shark trip before attempting an Offshore trip. Offshore trips involve sustained 3–5ft seas 30 miles out—be sure your party is physically prepared for those conditions.
Snorkeling & Sandbar Trips:
Gear: Double-check your mask, snorkel, and fins before arriving.
Masks: Do not bring a brand-new mask unless it has been pre-treated (the factory film will cause it to fog instantly). Do not bring full-face “bubble” masks, as they are dangerous and often fail.
Grooming: Men should shave before the trip to ensure the mask creates a proper seal against the face.
Wetsuits: If the water is below 80°F (typically Nov–April), a wetsuit is highly recommended. You can rent these at Captain Hooks
Lobstering Trips:
Mandatory Homework: You must watch at least one hour of lobstering tutorials on my YouTube Channel before the trip.
Physicality: These are freediving-only trips (no SCUBA) and are physically demanding.
Gear: Bring your own gloves. I will provide weight belts and other necessary equipment.
Final Expectations: What kind of experience should I expect?
I am your coach and captain, and you are my crew. This is a “working” experience where you are fully involved in the success of the day. If you want to just turn a handle while someone else does the work, I am not the captain for you. Come ready to learn, work hard, and have a “Reel Adventure!”
