Florida Keys Snapper

Conditions and outlook as of November 4, 2025.

November brings some good news from the water, and a good reason to say thank you. To the friends, guests, and customers who have been part of this year’s adventures: I appreciate you. Seventeen years into running private custom charters, sharing these days with you is still what keeps me going.

Here in the Keys, we have been fortunate to avoid a close call with a hurricane so far this year. My thoughts are with the people of Jamaica facing the difficult work of recovery. After 40 years of living with hurricanes in the Keys, I know the need lasts long after the headlines move on. If you are in a position to contribute to relief efforts, please consider helping.

A Few Updates from the Captain

This time of year gives me a chance to look at what worked, what needs adjusting, and how to keep the business moving forward. Making a living on the ocean has always required some flexibility, and this year has been no exception.

I am working to manage costs while keeping trips at a price I believe offers good value. Boat maintenance remains a priority. The new 2025 engines are part of that investment, along with the ongoing work that keeps the boat ready for your day on the water.

If you have enjoyed a trip with me, an honest review or a few photos shared from your day help other guests find the business and understand what I do. Word of mouth means a lot to an independent captain, and I appreciate everyone who takes the time.

Lobster Trips Wrap Up, Snorkeling Continues

My lobster trips have wrapped up for 2025. That is the end of my own trip schedule, rather than the statewide season, which was still open at the time of this update. I concentrate my lobster trips in the warmer months, when the water clarity, temperatures, and local lobster opportunities line up best for the experience I offer.

Snorkeling has been really good, with water temperatures still in the high 70s. As we move farther into fall, passing cold fronts will have more influence on visibility and comfort.

We can plan around what you would like to do, then make the final decisions based on the conditions. As the water cools another few degrees, a wetsuit may make getting in more comfortable. Rentals are available through Captain Hook’s Marina; ask about availability and pricing when preparing for your trip.

Reef Fishing Is Moving in the Right Direction

Reef fishing has been improving, with more fish and some larger ones returning to our local spots. It follows a pattern I have seen over the past few years: summer heat pushes fish away from some areas, and cooling water starts bringing them back.

The last week of October produced some excellent yellowtail snapper catches. Large mutton snapper showed up on roughly every other trip, with mackerel mixed in as well. Those are encouraging signs heading into the cooler months.

I am looking for that improvement to continue toward the end of the year. Every trip still depends on the conditions, but I like the direction things are going.

Offshore Tuna Opportunities

I have not run an offshore trip in a while, so I do not have a fresh firsthand catch report from out there. Our main mahi run has passed, though an opportunity can still come along when the right conditions line up.

The offshore outlook remains encouraging for blackfin and skipjack tuna. We need a suitable weather window to make that run, and this is a better fit for experienced anglers who want to take an active role.

Offshore fishing has plenty of moving parts. You are part of the crew, helping work the lines and deck under my direction while I drive and assist where I can. When it all comes together, that teamwork is a big part of the fun.
