Archived May 2016 update: Fishing observations, seasonal openings, equipment, and booking availability below reflect that period. Confirm current offerings and regulations before reserving.
May is one of those sweet spots in the Keys calendar. As our seasonal winds begin easing, we often get longer stretches of pleasant weather, clear warm water, and new fish moving into the area. There are plenty of ways to put together a good day on the water.
Early Reef Fishing for Yellowtail Snapper
Over the past few weeks, my groups have focused on yellowtail snapper along the deep reef. The early bite has been best, and suitable conditions have produced some excellent catches.
Some recent trips reached the ten-fish-per-person limit applicable to those outings in 2016. Those results describe past catches rather than a promise for your trip or guidance on current limits.
Yellowtail are fast, strong, and great fun on light tackle. They offer families a rewarding challenge, keep experienced anglers paying attention, and make an excellent dinner afterward.
Grouper and Offshore Opportunities
The May 1 reopening for the seasonally closed grouper fishery discussed in this report gives us another option. Wind has limited some deeper reef outings, but there are fish to challenge anglers when we get a suitable window. These reef bullies have home-field advantage, so be ready for a serious pull.
Offshore, dolphin, also called mahi-mahi, and tuna are our main targets as the season develops. Early dolphin opportunities often bring quality before quantity, with larger numbers typically arriving in June and July.
Tuna have already been plentiful. Multiple hookups can keep everybody busy, making teamwork an important part of the outing.
Sharks and Tarpon for a Bigger Challenge
Shallow-water catch-and-release shark trips and tarpon outings offer a different kind of adventure. Both can deliver powerful runs and memorable fights.
On recent shark trips, we have landed a good proportion of the fish hooked. Tarpon are less forgiving, with technique and luck both playing a part in bringing one alongside. Tell me which experience interests you so we can discuss realistic expectations.

Clear Water and Turtle Encounters
In-water activities have been great. I have run plenty of snorkeling trips and a few spearfishing outings during this stretch, with clear water making it especially enjoyable to explore.
Sea turtles have been a highlight. Recent snorkeling groups have been fortunate to encounter them in the water. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, which makes those moments all the more memorable.
I have also added three mermaid tails to the equipment available during this reporting period. They could be included for an additional fee when conditions and the participants’ abilities were suitable. Ask about current options if that interests your group.

Reservations and Getting in Touch
At the time of this update, May was filling up but still had room for more adventures. The reservations section of my website is the place to check availability and make a booking.
I do not answer calls while running charters. The guests aboard have my attention, and I usually catch up with messages and emails in the evening. Leave a voicemail if you miss me so I know how to help when I return.
My website covers the trip choices, preparation information, rates, and booking process. It is my secretary while I am out on the ocean—and it spends considerably more time near a computer than I do.
If your idea of a Maycation includes fishing, snorkeling, or a little of both, tell me who is coming and what sounds fun. I’ll help you choose an outing that fits your group and the conditions.
