Florida Keys Snapper

Fishing conditions, seasonal outlook, and business updates from February 2022.

I have been watching the winter weather up north, and I understand why a Florida Keys escape sounds good right now. If you are heading this way, here is what to expect from a February day on the water.

Local supplies and services have been harder to organize lately, but that preparation is part of my job. Your vacation time matters, and I want us spending it enjoying the trip rather than sorting out things that should have been handled beforehand.

February Fishing Starts with the Conditions

February is part of our cooler, windier season. We can make a starting plan, but the forecast, sea conditions, and your group’s comfort determine where we actually go.

A northerly wind can sometimes give us workable conditions on the ocean-side patch reefs close to shore. Those areas offer a useful alternative when the deeper reef is too exposed.

A four-hour trip can produce a wide variety of species. It is a good introduction for families and for experienced freshwater anglers getting their first taste of saltwater fishing.

On suitable days, the deeper reef has produced larger-than-usual yellowtail snapper, along with mutton snapper, kingfish, and grouper that we release during this period.

Sharks have been a significant challenge. On some difficult days, they have taken more than half our hooked fish before we could get them aboard. That is one of the factors behind decisions to change locations or techniques.

The deeper wrecks have offered mutton snapper opportunities, though this is more a patient search for a better fish than steady action. One good catch can make the time worthwhile.

Offshore Fishing Requires an Active Crew

I have been running mostly reef trips and have not been far offshore in quite a while. Reports from other captains have also been limited, so I do not have a fresh firsthand offshore catch report to share.

Blackfin tuna at the Marathon Humps would be a primary target when suitable weather gives us the opportunity. A typical plan is to fish the early tuna bite, then consider other options as we work back toward shore.

Depending on conditions and applicable regulations, those options might include deep-dropping for queen snapper in around 800 feet, fishing wrecks for mutton snapper, kingfish, or amberjack, or looking for mahi or sailfish when the opportunity and bait line up.

These are hands-on trips. I run and position the boat while guests help with the fishing under my direction. Familiarity with the equipment and techniques makes a difference, so tell me about everyone’s experience before booking.

Reading or watching relevant videos can provide useful background, but it does not replace practical fishing skills. We need to match the outing to the crew rather than choose the most demanding option and hope it fits.

Winter Snorkeling Needs Preparation and Flexibility

Snorkeling has given us some good days, but February conditions are less reliable. Wind, waves, and cooler water can limit the opportunities.

Several settled days can help visibility improve, though we still need to assess the actual water. Wetsuit rentals are available through Captain Hook’s, and I recommend discussing them before your outing.

Bring towels and a sweatshirt or another warm layer for after you get out. A clear reef can look inviting while the ride afterward still feels chilly.

Prepare for the Boat, Not Just the Dock

Conditions on the water can feel different from those on land. Dress in layers, bring towels even for a fishing-only trip, and pack the snacks and drinks your group needs.

If motion sickness is a concern, plan ahead and follow the directions for any remedy you use. Tell me about your concerns beforehand so we can discuss suitable trip options.

Have a camera ready for those memorable catches when it is appropriate to take a photo. We want to handle fish carefully and avoid keeping a fish waiting while everyone searches for a phone.

Your Photos and Reviews Help

For this 2022 season, I have substantially reduced advertising spending while working to keep charter rates manageable. Guest recommendations and honest reviews are valuable support for an independent business.

If you enjoy your trip, consider sharing a few words on Google, TripAdvisor, or Yelp. Details about what you did and enjoyed help future visitors decide whether the experience suits them.

I also appreciate favorite photos from your day. I am often busy helping with fish when those moments happen, and your pictures help show the experience beyond the catch at the dock.

Certainly a catch worth remembering.

Getting Ready for Spring Break

The recent windy stretch has given me time to complete waxing, servicing, and maintenance ahead of spring break. The boat has also received upgrades, even if I have not yet had a chance to get all the new pictures onto the website.

I am looking forward to putting that preparation to work and sharing more days on the water with you.

If you are escaping winter and weighing your boat-day options, tell me what your crew would enjoy and where you would like some guidance. We can discuss the fishing, possible snorkeling, and preparation for your dates so everyone arrives with a clear idea of the plan.
