Florida Keys Snapper

Fishing conditions, seasonal outlook, and holiday booking arrangements from November 2021.

November brings changes I look forward to: more breaks from the heat, cooling water, and the first movements of winter fish. Snapper and jacks are here, while mackerel, grouper, porgies, hogfish, and other visitors can change the day’s direction.

The best approach is to stay flexible. Fish move, tides change, and a quiet spot can give way to an unexpected opportunity nearby. I build a starting plan, then adjust to what is actually happening.

Reef Fishing Is Improving as the Water Cools

Reef temperatures are around 80°F at the time of this update. I expect more cooling as November progresses, though the timing will depend on the weather.

Yellowtail snapper fishing has been very good when the wind and current line up favorably. We have seen consistent catches in both size and numbers on those days.

The shallow patches have produced mangrove snapper, mutton snapper, yellow jacks, mackerel, hogfish, and even a cobia. The variety is part of the fun, with opportunities to adjust the approach for children, beginners, and experienced anglers.

These areas are a short ride from the dock and can give us alternatives when the deeper reef is uncomfortable. Depending on conditions, we may also be able to switch sides of the island to find a more suitable place to fish.

Bayside mangrove snapper fishing has also been excellent. The shallower, more protected areas are worth considering for families or guests concerned about motion sickness. The techniques are generally more forgiving, making this a useful introduction to fishing.

Offshore Tuna and Predator Challenges

Offshore fishing has been good, with blackfin tuna a main target as mahi opportunities become less frequent.

Getting hooked tuna to the boat has been the challenge. On a recent trip, sharks and other marine predators took about half the fish we hooked.

Using the tackle effectively and following the coaching can improve our chances, but predator interference remains outside our control. It is one reason we keep assessing whether a location is worth continuing to fish.

Lobster Trips Have Finished for the Year

My lobster trips are finished for this season. Local conditions and the available legal-sized lobster no longer support the experience I want to offer.

At the time of this update, I plan to begin accepting reservations for the 2022 lobster season in July. Mini-season inquiries are being handled through my contact form, with details about the group required before booking.

Snorkeling Needs a Flexible Alternative

Snorkeling remains possible when the conditions are suitable. Cooling water makes wetsuits worth arranging, and Captain Hook’s Marina has rentals available during this report period.

Wind can reduce visibility for several days, sometimes longer. We will discuss the outlook and the locations that may work, rather than assume every reserved date will have clear water.

For these winter bookings, the plan includes switching to a shorter fishing outing or another suitable activity if snorkeling conditions are poor. Make sure everyone in your group understands that flexibility before reserving.

Help Me Plan for Your Whole Crew

December reservations are increasing, and I expect to spend long days on the water. The website explains the activities and preparation while I am unavailable to answer calls.

Use your booking notes to tell me how many people are coming, everyone’s experience, what you hope to do, and anything that would help me organize the trip.

These are hands-on outings. I demonstrate the techniques and coach you through them, starting with manageable steps and building as you become comfortable.

If you prefer a relaxed day rather than concentrating on fishing techniques, say so. If someone needs a different pace or teaching approach, tell me. That information helps us choose an activity that fits rather than discover a mismatch after departure.

Please Do Not Arrive Sick

Illness remains an important consideration during this November 2021 period. Anyone who is actively sick cannot come aboard.

If someone in your party becomes ill, contact me before heading to the marina. We can discuss the situation during the check-in process rather than put other guests, my household, and upcoming trips at risk.

Boat Work May Affect Late-November and December Trips

I am arranging a tower and second-station installation, with several businesses involved. The work may affect bookings after Thanksgiving and into roughly the first two weeks of December 2021.

The exact installation window is not confirmed at the time of this report. Supply, weather, and workforce availability could all change the schedule.

A 24-foot bay boat may be available for reef or bayside alternatives, limited to groups of four or fewer. It will not be used for offshore trips.

If the work prevents me from running your reservation, I will contact you as promptly as possible and help identify another reputable local operator where I can. Please discuss availability with me before building plans around this installation period.

Thanks for reading and helping prepare your crew. I am looking forward to more adventures worth repeating.

Considering a holiday charter or wondering which winter activity suits your family? Send me your dates, group size, and a few details about what you enjoy. We can check the boat arrangements and work out a practical plan before you reserve.
