Archived late-summer update: Fishing reports, water conditions, lobster expectations, and booking availability below reflect the original reporting period.
As soon as the kids went back to school, things got quiet down here. After one of the busiest seasons I have experienced in the Keys, I have been catching my breath and finding time to explore.
That is one advantage of the quieter season. Between charters, I can try new areas, work on techniques, and look for opportunities to share with future guests. I am still open for business, and there is plenty to enjoy without the summer crowds.
Fishing Opportunities Beyond the Summer Rush
I have been following local fishing and diving reports closely. The familiar seasonal patterns appear to be holding: snapper along the reef edge have been productive early and late, with stronger reports from night fishing.
Offshore dolphin, also called mahi-mahi, are becoming less plentiful, while tuna have continued biting well on many days at the humps. Those reports help guide the planning, but we still need suitable conditions for the trip.
Although we had a long stretch of calm summer weather into September, more recent wind and rain forced me to cancel my last three outings. That leaves me short on firsthand observations from those days, so I want to be clear about what comes from other local reports.
Visibility, Jellyfish, and Lobster Expectations
Water clarity has varied by location. Moon jellyfish have been common on the reef, so I recommend a long-sleeve rash guard for in-water activities. It provides useful coverage, while giving jellyfish room remains important.
With fewer people lobstering, I am hopeful that bay and ocean-side coral heads will offer renewed opportunities. I have not checked enough recent spots to confirm that improvement, however. Less pressure is encouraging, but it does not guarantee a particular catch.
A Quieter Time to Explore
There is still heat to prepare for, along with the possibility of breezy or rainy days. The benefit is a slower pace around the islands and more room to work through the options for your group.
Thank you to everybody who has supported my business and recommended me to friends and family. I work hard to give you a day worth returning for, and I remain grateful to share the local knowledge and adventures that make this place special to me.
If a quieter Keys getaway sounds appealing, tell me when you are visiting and what you would enjoy doing. I’ll help you explore the seasonal options and choose an outing that fits your crew.
